Five Tower Defence Habits That Are Quietly Costing You

June 8, 2026 · Markus Vogel

After playing a lot of tower defence on my phone, I've noticed the same errors creeping into almost every game I try. The first is overbuilding early. It feels productive to fill the map, but you usually just spread your resources too thin to matter.

The second is ignoring range. A tower placed at a corner where the path bends covers far more ground than the same tower on a straight stretch. I used to plant towers wherever there was space. Now I look for those elbows first.

Third habit: never upgrading, always building new. Two upgraded towers almost always outperform four basic ones, because damage tends to scale faster than cost. Fourth is forgetting to leave a reserve. Save a little for the wave that surprises you.

The fifth is the sneakiest. It's not adjusting your plan when the game clearly changed the enemy mix on you. Tower defence rewards flexibility more than any perfect opening. Once I let go of my favorite layouts, I started clearing levels I'd been stuck on for days.
