Why Some Strategy Games Feel Awful on a Phone

A great strategy game can be ruined by controls that fight your thumbs. I've refunded games that had brilliant ideas but expected me to do precision selection on a five-inch screen. The best ones design around the limits of touch from the start.

The clearest sign of good design is where the menus live. If upgrade options appear near your thumb and never hide the action, that's a team that tested on real phones. Radial menus tend to beat cramped list menus for this reason.

Another thing I watch for is forgiveness. Can you undo a misplaced unit? Does a mis-tap cost you a match? Games that punish small input errors feel exhausting, while games that let you correct course stay fun even when you're playing tired.

When a strategy game gets this right, you stop noticing the controls entirely, which is the whole point. That invisible comfort is worth more than fancy graphics on mobile, every time.
